HoweverThe seven-year figure  DOES come from somewhereThe belief that medical debt will magically disappear after seven years might not be entirely accurate,  but there are actually laws in place that limit the amount of time that any unpaid bill can stay on your credit report.According to provisions in the Fair Credit Reporting Act,  most accounts that go into collection can only be reported on your credit report for up to seven years. This is because the policy was created in response to a situation where the capitalist relations that the United States desired with the country were not possible or approaching such a situation. In 1824 the United States issued the Monroe Doctrine, stating the United States invitation for European powers to stay out of the western hemisphere and should they not, the United States may, at any time, intervene. This is a policy that was motivated by national security and economic interests. Yet as the first real bit of attention the United States paid to Latin America, it was not really foreign policy toward Latin America. The Monroe Doctrine was issued as a statement of foreign policy toward (or more appropriately against) Europe. As an action in the interest of national security, however, there was little for the Monroe Doctrine to deter and indeed â€Å"the perceived threats were greatly exaggerated by Americans at the time.† The United States interest in Latin American relations was sparked by the opportunity to promote and maintain the United States economic interests in the independent Latin America that no longer adhered to Spanish-imposed trade restrictions. The United States, then under Secretary of State John Quincy Adams, sought to establish diplomatic relations with several states of Latin America in 1821. This was the extent to which the United States pursued some formal policy in Latin America, only securing United States trade interests, but not vigorously creating or opening new markets. The isolationist United States opted to maintain minimum interaction to ensure stable trade. Today an isolationist United States seems not only unlikely, but more close to impossible. As a young nation the United States was satisfied with the stable trading it enjoyed with its southern neighbors, until, of course, that stability was threatened. In 1898 Senator Henry Teller looked to protect his constituents who were sugar beet growers from the competition of the profitable sugar cane industry in Cuba by proposing the anti-annexation amendment to the war resolution concerning Cuba. While this avoided problems with Teller’s constituents, it also left an ambiguous place for the official status of Cuba after the war was over. The war for Cuban independence was over and though the United States would not annex Cuba as a territory, this did not mean that Cuba would become automatically a sovereign state. Cuba’s autonomous government would be developed very much with strings attached. From the United States’ point of view, the Cuban government could not be expe cted to develop democratically and tranquilly on its own without being vulnerable. The era of Latin American independence from Spain spurned a ripple of political turmoil that even today makes waves. During and leading up the Spanish-American War, the United States had not yet developed an ideological rhetoric that influenced foreign policy and so responded to the Cuban-Spanish conflict on the most practical level. The conflict was affecting US trade and it seemed that a free Cuba would offer wider and more consistent trade opportunities. In 1896 the secretary of state of the United States issued a statement â€Å"describing the disruptive effect of the conflict on US economic interests and the dangers faced by US citizens living in Cuba† and â€Å"politely suggested that the Spanish permit limited home rule.† While several events precipitated U.S. involvement in the Cuban-Spanish conflict (lobbies, yellow journalism, explosion on the Maine), President Cleveland recognized the importance of U.S. trading and investment in the region, and that a prolonged conflict would compromise these interest. In other words, while other circumstances may have encouraged the conflict, the initial interest in Cuba and eventual engagement in war was based on the US interest in protecting individual US citizens’ investments and the US economy as a whole, which stood to lose out because of the civil conflict. After the United States took control of Cuba from Spain, the negotiation of settling Cuban independence was still primarily controlled by United States desire to ensure a trouble free trade zone: the Platt Amendment allowed the US to intervene in Cuban affairs whenever it deemed necessary. This marked the beginning of a model of US policy that would be tried and true by the birth of the Cold War. The idea of a canal in Central America connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific was many years in coming when France finally decided to begin building one in Panama. The United States had been researching the possibility of building a canal as well, but in Nicaragua. The benefits of a canal were obvious: a route that does not include circumventing all of South America in order to ship goods to the pacific coast increases trade and lowers shipping costs, which in turn secures and expands United States economic interests in the United States. Eventually, France abandoned its beginning of a canal for lack of money and left it to United States to pick up the slack. Colombia, however, was unwilling to accept the United States treaty that would allow them to control the canal after it was built. In this case the United States proceeded to insert itself in Latin American affairs in the hopes of creating and controlling trade instead of protecting existing interests. The Panama Canal was not an economic interest of the United States’ insofar as they had no formal right to it, but stabilizing a revolutionary state could obtain it the right to that interest. The United States assisted the independence of Panama from Colombia in exchange for a treaty that satisfied the United States desire to build and control a canal there. And in the process it also managed to cross the line between protecting its economic interests and being an economic imperialist. President Taft, in his valedictory message said that his policy had been â€Å"directed to the increase of American Trade upon the axiomatic principle that the Government of the United States shall extend all proper support to every legitimate and beneficial American enterprise abroad.† The United States was involved in dozens of interventional actions in Latin America during the19th and 2oth century, and â€Å"every case began with US government intervention, after which the government officials brokered a financial arrangement between the intervened Latin American government and the US private sector.† The Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine is yet another response to an economic interest. By claiming the right to essentially manage the foreign debt of any Latin American country that could not do so itself, the United States skillfully inserted itself into what amounted to a debt crisis in Latin America. As the United States’ policy toward Cuba became ineffective and stale, the framework to suggest a change had to come from and trade point of view. The United States was never alarmed by instability in Mà ©xico and so had no reason to go there and â€Å"promote democracy†. Despite a revolution, a debt crisis, and a peso crisis, Mà ©xico is a â€Å"country historically cautious about relations with its powerful northern neighbor,† but United States’ effort to alleviate the stress of Mà ©xico’s economic shortcomings have bee n welcomed and social unrest has been successful oppressed. When he took office, United States President Carter wanted to make the US relationship with Mà ©xico a priority in order to â€Å"restore the financial community’s confidence in Mà ©xico.† The discovery of oil in Mà ©xico around the same time ensured this. Negotiations ensued over United States investment in the newly discovered resource. When the economic interests behind US involvement in a Latin American government become obsolete, instead of abandoning the policy, the United States tends to let the policy stand on the feet of security and ideology. When ideology is the only force behind a policy it can be neutral or even detrimental to US economic interests. When this has become apparent in US history, the policy tends to be questioned and eventually redefined within the context of US economic interest. This is the case is Cuba, where after 40 years of embargo, several bills are being introduced in the Congress that repeal the embargo. Although the wording of the bills suggest that opening US markets to Cuba will be a more effective way to undermine the Castro regime that the embargo (which very well may be true), there are other interests that are more compelling for the congressman that are involved. Many of them are from states where the businesses such as agriculture will benefit greatly from trade with the Cu ban market. There was no compelling reason, according to John Quincy Adams and many of his contemporaries, to actively pursue diplomacy south of the United States. Only when it was inconvenient for the United States to endure the turmoil that lay south, so to speak, did the US intervene in the region. As US-Latin American relations matured and the United States intervened as an authority, an accompanying ideology began to develop that superceded this tenet. Just as in the Platt Amendment, the US began seeking, whether deliberately or not, insurance for long term compliance. The reasoning that Latin Americans are a people that must be herded along and that they need the structure that the United States has to offer in order to save them from themselves was invoked over years. United States ideology developed as a belief that United States’ model of government and culture is the framework for a society where the United States has the reasonable and noble interest of protecting its citizens’ interests in trade and investment. These guidelines or expectations that delineate the ideal United States neighbor became an ideology that justified United States policies through moral and humanistic lenses. The Value of Female Friendships I met my girlfriend Dana in college, and in the years since then our friendship has grown exponentially. Nine years ago, Dana told me that she had breast cancer. Shes a survivor. In that timeframe, my marathon walking buddy Allison found out she had appendicidal cancer. She too is a survivor. With two very close girlfriends in the same situation- one that was certainly new to all of us- I found myself asking: How as a girlfriend do I handle this? What do I do to support them? Where do I look for answers? This is not an article about cancer. It is an article about the incredible life-force underlining the word girlfriend. Girlfriend Support I remember the moment I heard about Allisons cancer. I didnt want to talk with my husband, even though he is a great man and a caring friend of Allisons as well. I wanted to talk with my female friends. I wanted their advice, their hugs, their sincere listening while I asked ‘why? Seeking advice, sharing concern, providing support and love, I wanted to be around the women who understood how I felt and who, I hoped, would help me be a better friend to my friends going through one of lifes scariest situations. So, why are girlfriends so important? I dug in and studied my own need for female community and what pulled me toward my friendships as a primary support system in a time a great stress. I was especially curious to find out why couldnt I fill this need with my husband or through the wisdom of books, advisors or other communities? Was it just me? Turns out it wasnt. Relationship Research A little research led me to a captivating book that spelled out the answers to me. The Tending Instinct, by Shelley E. Taylor, unlocks some of the mysteries of women, men, and the biology of our relationships. The big ah-ha! I discovered in its pages is that this need for community with other women is biological; it is part of our DNA. Taylors book consolidated a variety of studies covering cultural factors, decades of research, anecdotal references- even the biological ties to the girlfriend concept in the animal kingdom. An unending stream of fascinating facts helped define why we as women are more social, more community focused, collaborative, less competitive and, above all, why we need our girlfriends. Spike 1 (Personality of student): There may be involuntary signs shown by the student about his inclination to violence in his behavior, thoughts or attitudes. The student might often show out frustration and tries to alienate. There is a collection of acts of "injustice" done against him registered in his mind. The student often shows signs of depression such as lethargy, physical fatigue or lack of interest towards any activity performed. He exhibits selfishness and has self-centred thoughts with great inclination towards entertainment filled with violence. He behaves inhumane and has low tolerance levels. Spike 2 (Family Background): The student might have a damaged relationship with parents. He might have easy access to weapons at home, unlimited non-monitored access to the media and internet. Spike 3 (Academic History): The student might have a low tolerance for punishments and bullying at school. He might be with a school having fixed culture with unsupervised computer access. There might little trust with the teachers. Spike 4 (Social History): The student might have companions who have great inclination to violent activities. He might have unlimited access to internet, computer and media. The knowledge of a student and his attitude towards the use of drugs and alcohol too play a vital role. E.E. Cummings is characteristically American. He is a famous, well known American author. I found that his writing style is of a stereotypical American. What is it to be stereotypically American? Well I found that one of the main things is that you can say or write whatever you want and not feel threatened about if what your saying is the right thing or not. Also a lot of Americans will use sarcasm. Also you don’t have to come right out and say whatever you mean. Some will talk about something completely different then what they are really trying to say. Cummings used a good amount of sarcasm in his writing. He sort of made fun of things in his poems without coming out and saying it. He also doesn’t just come right out and say what he means. I haven’t been able to figure out many of his poems at all. The things he says just makes no sense at all. Even after analyzing his work I haven’t been able to understand what he means. I think that is one thing that most Americans do in one way or another. Cummings also wrote a large amount of poems that probably would have offended people in one way or another. But freedom of speech is one thing that all Americans have. We can say whatever we want and not have to answer to anyone about it. If we were in another country that freedom of speech isn’t allowed he possibly could have been thrown in jail for some of his writings. He was known for his lack of correct punctuation and capitalization in his writings. Very often he would write his name as "e.e. cummings", not even capitalizing his own name. He basically had his own style of writing things even though they were not written correctly. He never followed any of the rules which might have been one of the reasons he was so remembered. He was born in Cambridge Massachusetts. He grew up there and worked at a mail-order publishing company for a short time. He decided to volunteer for the Norton-Harjes Ambulance group in France. I am. I am. † Tom and Penelope say, â€Å"Never, never never ask for money. † How can that be if the world runs on money? Well it doesn’t. Money is our means of exchange. It isn’t a cure for unhappiness or ill health or loneliness. We trade money for things. That’s all. Sometimes you don’t even need money. In fact, with the Rich Dreams system you get what you ask for by MEANS over which you have no control. Here’s an example: Shelly lives in Austin, Texas and was in the process of selling her house. Shelly didn’t need money. All she had to do was ask and be willing to receive. What do you want? Use this system and you can have everything you want. Good Luck and Great Adventures Lesson 3 – Vacations Are Worth Their Weight In Gold Vacations can be more than a needed break. They can be a great tool for increasing your wealth. When you detach or let go of your day to day problems it gives the Universe a change to make things happen in your life. You don’t have to do it all. Not in this system. In the Rich Dreams Success System we ask and the Universe provides. Delivery is included. But the big trick is letting go, which is why vacations are so incredibly valuable. They are, that is, if you really, truly let go. Vacation time can, of course, be anything but fun. Have you ever waited so long and planned so hard and then lost your luggage or your wallet? So many TV commercials remind us of how terrible it would be to lose something valuable. We spend so much effort and time trying to make the trip perfect that it can never measure up. The family reunion that finally makes us all the perfect family never happens. The Great Getaway that changes our lives forever is mostly fiction. The idea is to enjoy what you do have regardless of the imperfections. I just returned from two weeks away and I can attest to almost falling into those pitfalls. Throughout my time with old friends and family I stayed focused each day. I let God take care of all the details. The real vacation is in the detachment. Each time I started on a new leg of my journey, I took the time to write down particulars about the flight, my luggage, rental car, the works. Then I detached and remembered to breathe a lot. I had a wonderful time for the most part because I didn’t muck it up with unreasonable or unrealistic expectations. To recreate and vacate (leave) truly means that we need to let go of all the control and truly rest. I think vacation time is designed to help us perfect our ability to detach. Fun, rest and relaxation is an essential part of getting everything you want in life. So don’t wait for a vacation to do it. Enjoy every day as much as you can. Good Luck and Great Adventures Lesson 4 – Anytime Spring Cleaning There is one powerful principle which you can use to speed your success along. It is the Vacuum principle which simply stated says that nature hates a vacuum. That means all you have to do to bring more good into your life is to clear out that which is no longer useful to you. Or as we think of it†¦ Making Room for Your Good. Rich Dreamers write lists all the time. Have you noticed hat some of the things you have asked for are a little slow in showing up? This may be due to a number of various factors like blocking your good, chemicalization or divine timing. It may however be something very simple. Something a little â€Å"getting rid of the cobwebs† can fix. If you don’t have room for your good, you need to do some Spring Cleaning. Time to Clean Up and Clear Out! Try cleaning out your personal spaces – closets,   cabinets, desks, drawers, garage, basement and gardens. Get rid of old or never worn clothes, household items, toys. If you haven’t used something or worn it in a while, let it go. You don’t need it anymore. At work throw out or store old files and half-finished projects. Doing this activity not only makes you feel fresh and revived, it helps you discover new things that you want. So often we continue to keep things that have lost their usefulness out of habit or a false sense of comfort. The wonder of this is the creation of a vacuum. Nature and the Universe hates a vacuum so now there is room for the new, fresh things that you have requested to rush into your life. Remember that when you do clean up you are digging around in old energies. So you may very well stir up old arguments or ill feelings. A warm shower washes all that far, far away. Are there people in your life that you may need to let go? Could there be friends and acquaintances that you have held on to that you suspect are not for your highest good? We have all experienced this and while it can be painful we usually see the truth of our decisions   in time. We need to be surrounded with positive, affirming â€Å"like minded† people who encourage the changes and progress we are making. Release the negative, destructive ones so you can spend less of your energy trying to make those people â€Å"fit† into your new life and attitude. Activities need to be reexamined too. Do you still feel energized by the way you spend your free time? Are you refreshed by your diversions? Maybe you need to write down some new ideas for fun and relaxation. Remember the last lesson about vacations. We all need and deserve it! While you are cleaning and clearing remember your computer. If you’re like me there are hundreds of   old emails and messages that need to go. Make room for new information and words of encouragement. By doing these simple things you will feel lighter and ready for all the Good that the Universe has to offer. Lesson 5 – Divine Timing It doesn’t matter what you want, you can have it. A new car, a home in the country, a slim trim and healthy body†¦ it can all be yours for the asking. The only thing is that you don’t get control over when you get it. That’s up to the Universe. Let’s assume you’ve diligently written down your requests. You’ve seen them in your life and then you detached, but you don’t get everything immediately. So why don’t you get everything you asked for NOW! You want it yesterday, right? What is the hold up! The hold up is you’re probably not ready. I’d like to share a very personal story about this process. I have been challenged with weight problems since our last child was born, about twenty-two years ago. When we began to write the book, â€Å"I’m Rich Beyond My Wildest Dreams. I am. I am. I am. † we were in a good weight loss cycle. Tom even mentions that we were lighter and healthier than ever. But as so many other times in my life, I was not able to sustain that â€Å"program† and over the next five years I lost and gained close to one hundred pounds. I felt like I was asking for this to happen in my life the right way. â€Å"I’m slim and trim and healthy. I am I am I am† is a song I sang regularly. I was following all the â€Å"rules† of enthusiasm and detachment and still the permanent weight loss alluded me. I never quit desiring this change in my life, but no matter what I did or how hard I tried, no weight loss plan worked for very long. I was embarrassed and frustrated. We were supposed to be examples of success and I felt more like a failure. Like I was doing something wrong. About a year ago I finally let this feeling go and decided I would be happy with who I am. I remember the day, vividly. It was my first day home after emergency surgery, September 11, 2001. Two wake up calls were enough for me. I was happy to be alive and I let go. Of course, once I detached the Universe could go to work. Divine Timing must have kicked in. One morning about six months later I awoke and instinctively knew that this time would be different. The energy for true and lasting weight loss was finally there. Over the course of a few weeks my support system was built. I met the people I was meant to meet and I found a system for me. The Universe provided everything that I need to succeed. The system is, pardon the expression, a cake walk. I have more energy than ever before. I approach exercise as a joy for the very first time in my memory and everyone is seeing â€Å"less of me† when we meet. Much less of me. The message that I want you to take from my example is this — Never give up on your desire, but do give up planning for it to happen on your schedule. Detach and let Diving Timing take over. We know that we have to grow and change and become the person that can handle the desires we seek. Trust the Universe to know the correct time for that to happen. Live your dreams every day. As humans, we have begun to realize that we cannot consume these resources at a high rate because if we do our future generations will be left with nothing. A large part of cutting down on resource consumption is practicing sustainability on college campuses. Colleges and Universities around the country are currently attempting to become more â€Å"green† or environmentally sustainable. Nazareth College has already begun to take steps towards sustainability with new L.E.D lights and recycling bins around campus, but the college can definitely take more strides towards becoming a more green campus. Nazareth College could improve on becoming a more sustainable campus by creating an atmosphere where students are more involved, limiting resource use in dorms, academic buildings and the dining hall, and by giving students and faculty more incentive to act in ways that are envir onment friendly. Nazareth College must receive interest of sustainability from students to truly succeed in becoming a greener school. Students play a vital role in fulfilling the potential a campus has to becoming environmentally sustainable because they are the main users of the resources on the college.
